A smart card
is basically a plastic ID card with an embedded
computer memory chip which can be read from and
written to. Encryption methodologies prevent
just anyone from altering the data stored on a
smart card and memory capacities range from a
few to thousands of bytes of data. Data
exchanges with smart cards can be through a
physical connection, or be wireless.
We normally only provides smart cards and smart
card devices with systems that we create. In the
past we have devised systems that use smart
cards to vend bulk water and we have another
system that functions like a
"safety-training-resume-on-a-card" and allows
construction workers to easily gain access to
job sites by proving their safety
certifications.
The fundamental
reason for using smart cards instead of those
that employ a bar code, magnetic stripe, or RFID
chip, is that the smart card is to be the
exclusive container of some data that cannot be
easily accessed by a computer system.
