Want to know, at
any given time, where your people are located?
Where your assets, such as forklift trucks,
handcarts, and wheelchairs are? How about your
inventory?
Closely related to
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
technology, RTLS stationary readers are radio
frequency based and use triangulation to locate
special tags (transponders) which can be
attached to literally anything that potentially moves!
Real-time
locating systems
not only display real-time information onto
computer screens, they can also warn you when a
tag has moved outside a predetermined perimeter
and display and report upon where any tag has
been (and for how long it's been there) in the
recent past.
Note that these
systems are typically installed and used within
a given physical space, such as a factory,
hospital, office building, or parking lot.
That's because the readers and tags used in
these systems transmit and receive over
relatively short distances (i.e. a few hundred
metres). This is why RTLS technology is often
termed "indoor GPS."
