Such systems
are most commonly used for remotely recording
performed tasks, inspections, and other related
activities from a
persons "tour" or examination of a number of
devices, instruments, physical spaces, or other
distinct data collection "checkpoints." These systems,
in effect, electronically log what individuals
have accomplished and where they have been throughout a workday.
One potential and
valuable aspect of these systems is that
we can collect incontrovertible data regarding the system
operator's presence at a particular place at a
recorded date and time. Were durable bar code or
RFID tags to be initially deployed at a number
of fixed data collection points, one could know
that Bob was present at Door #15 at exactly
11:15 p.m. on May 31st.
In simple terms,
you might use such a system if you wanted to
record, through a mobile device, any or all of
the following:
What (what
thing or job?)
Where
(where it is/was it located?)
Task or
operation (what work was done?)
Who (who
did the work?)
Duration
(how long did it take them?)
Example
applications that we've developed or proposed in
the past that would fall into this category are:
Home
inspections
Remote oil
and gas drilling or pumping facilities
inspections
Night
watchman's tour of inspection
Naval ship
instrument tour and inspection
Shopping
mall reporting of security, custodial, and
maintenance personnel activities
